PRSSA Supports Walk to END Alzheimer’s

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. –The Public Relations Student Society of America’s Purple PRoject team supported the annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s event Saturday, Sept. 28 on the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville campus. The Purple PRoject team arrived in their purple at

8 a.m. to register and set up their volunteer water stations. The walk began at 9 a.m. with many local supporters and friends of the Purple PRoject team walking to end Alzheimer’s disease.

There were some who were not able to attend the actual walk, but they were “virtual” walkers who still showed their support by encouraging donations for the cause. One of the actual walkers of the Purple PRoject team, Jeri Sitze, arrived with a smile and eager to begin the walk.

“I am very excited because even though I don’t have a family member or know anybody who has personally been affected by Alzheimer’s, I think it’s a great cause to support,” Sitze said. Many agree with Sitze in supporting the cause, which was evident by all the orange “promise flowers” that could be seen waving in the air.

“Promise flowers” were available to represent why people support the Walk. There were orange “promise flowers” to represent the people who didn’t personally know somebody, but still wanted to support the cause; purple promise flowers to represent people who personally knew somebody who died from Alzheimer’s; yellow promise flowers to represent those caring for someone suffering from Alzheimer’s; and the blue promise flowers to represent those suffering from Alzheimer’s.

A local supporter, Brittany Jones-Wilson, participated in the Walk with eyes wide open. “I never realized just how serious having Alzheimer’s really was, but seeing all of these people here makes me feel good to be apart of creating such a monumental change,” Jones-Wilson said. And indeed she did contribute to helping the cause by walking the 1-mile route.

This year participants could choose to walk a 1-mile or 3-mile route. Both routes followed the trails that wind through the SIUE Gardens and throughout the campus. As walkers approached the end, greeters were there to cheer them on thanking them for their support.

Several local vendors came to provide informational brochures, food, and refreshments; one local vendor, the Goodeye Photoshare, offered courtesy pictures for the teams walking. The Purple PRoject along with the other teams, got their picture taken and captured a moment to never forget.

PRSSA Handing Out Chocolate

Halloween is nearing and it has been proven that chocolate helps students do better in math, chocolate makes people feel better, chocolate helps students relax, and chocolate is key in people living longer lives. PRSSA wants to help students relax before their exams, which is why this event is helpful.  PRSSA is hosting a Midterm Chocolate event to help students prepare for their midterms. Based on a study we have read, PRSSA strongly believes that chocolate is a contributing factor in helping students achieve higher scores and stress less before an exam.

It’s Not Too Late to Join

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – The Public Relations Student Society of America is always looking for more students to join their organization. Many believe this organization is only for persons interested in the field of public relations; however, membership offers excellent networking and professional development opportunities for any career field.

“It’s not just for public relations students or for students in the Speech Communication department,” said Dawn Embry, president of PRSSA.

Along with networking among other students in the organization, there are also additional professional development including National Conference, Tech Day, Pro-Am Day and various regional conferences.

PRSSA holds their meetings every other Wednesday on the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville campus. These meetings give members a wide range of opportunities from meeting professionals in a certain career, learning about ethics on the job or assistance with their resumes.

PRSSA held a barbeque Aug. 28 to kick off the membership for the year and had their first official meeting Sept. 11. Membership dues are $70 annually, which may seem high to a college student, but it can open doors for students in their future careers.

“It’s a legitimate monetary request because PRSSA provides real time connection between students and professionals,” said Paige Lowe.

Students should definitely take PRSSA into consideration when choosing their involvement with the university. PRSSA focuses on enhancing the education of members by creating opportunities for professional development and networking within the industry.

                                                                                PRSSA Takes Philadelphia

The Public Relations Student Society of America organization has four major events every school year, including the most recent event, National Conference, which just occurred this past October. National Conference, which was held in Philadelphia at the Loews Hotel this year, Oct. 25-Oct. 29, is not what most think of when they hear the word ‘conference’.

People do not attend the conference to compete with others in the same field, but they do attend to get the experience. “National Conference provides networking opportunities, professional development, and inspiration for the future”, said Dawn Embry, president of PRSSA.

Embry was the only member of PRSSA from the SIUE chapter that attended, but she got to meet a wide range of people from all over the country. She has attended National Conference before in previous years, but every year she goes, she always learns something new.

“I participated in chapter development, professional development, and personal development sessions”, said Embry.

This is her first year being president of PRSSA so learning about chapter development was especially interesting to her. The chapter development workshop entailed leaders facing challenges in various situations such as creating opportunities for growth for others.

                                                                                                -more-

Workshops also varied from fashion in public relations to ethics on the job to creating balance between your job and your personal life. There were also opportunities to enjoy the city while there. PRSSA members took bus tours of the Philadelphia, went shopping, and experienced the natural beauty of the city.

PRSSA members should consider taking National Conference for all the many exciting new opportunities. Public relations professionals give great advice, which is beneficial for future professionals to take advantage of.

Subject line: PRSSA Handing Out Chocolate for Finals

Publication: The Alestle

Dear Ms. Merret-Murry;

Do you like chocolate? Studies have shown that there are health benefits in eating chocolate and the Public Relations Student Society of America will be giving out chocolate to students to aid them in preparing for finals. There will be members of PRSSA handing out chocolate in the library and Peck Hall.

Based on a study PRSSA found, there is reason to believe that chocolate is a contributing factor in helping students achieve higher scores and lessen stress before an exam. The research findings show that chocolate helps students do better in math, helps students relax, makes people feel better, and is key in helping people live longer lives.

Because students are already stressed from classes and studying, PRSSA wanted to help students in a positive and appealing way. Most people like chocolate and especially since Christmas is nearing, we felt that it was the most opportune time for this event.

I will follow up with you soon to discuss your interest in the Finals Chocolate event. If you have any questions or are interested in finding out more information on the event, please feel free to contact me directly at 314-540-4771 or at paigewhitehead01@yahoo.com. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,
